Only one I can think of is Percy Jackson, cause it's the one that's always compared to HP. However it doesn't quite fit the description you want cause it's also a series. Same thing goes for the Chronicles of Narnia and Artemis Fowl. Oh man, all the good Harry-Potter-like books are series! Can't think of anything else.

My other suggestion is to visit bookstores, see the new stuff they have. Last time I went to a bookstore they had all these new books about vampires. Try to see if they have new ones about witches and wizards, too ;)

Old Magic by Marianne Curley. Awesome story that has magic and love.

  4. DngrsAngl Says:

The Forgotten Bests of Eld by Patricia McKillip
The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
    Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Sorry - this one's a series, but I found it very satisfying: the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

It also features a wizard named Harry, but he's an adult private investigator operating in Chicago, helping people deal with supernatural shenanigans. (He's in the yellow pages under 'Wizards').

Harry Dresden's wit is to kill for.

The Book of Lost Souls The Ivy MacTavish Novels.Michelle has crafted an intriguing world where the supernatural and normal live side-by-side, and created characters that you love from the moment you meet them. It is an intense ride from beginning to end; it kept me hooked. I highly recommend this book.
