What are some good young adult books about magic?

I would not consider myself a "fan" of harry potter, I dont like how that sounds, but I do love the books and I am very inspired by how they are written and how close you feel to the characters and how the pages are soaked with history, it feels so real. Does anyone know any good magic books or fantasy books that could compare to Harry Potter? I also like things like werewolves... Yep THANKS!

  1. Twilight Original Says:

    The Mortal Instrument Series by Cassandra Clare- The books are about a Girl who can all of a sudden see this whole other world, with Demons, warlocks, and shadowhunters- who hunt demons. She falls in love with one of the shadowhunters only to find out a terrible secret from her past. One of my favorite series, very addicting.

    A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray- Set in the late 1800's England, it's a story about 4 girls who want change, who want to do something different with their lives other than becoming "ladies." A story of magic, love, and heartbreak.

    I just finished reading The Changeover, by Margaret Mahy, for my Children's Fantasy Fiction course. I really enjoyed it, and though I wouldn't compare it to HP, it's definitely YA and about magic. Highly recommend it.

    The His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman (the books that the movie The Golden Compass was based on) look very good and are extremely well-regarded, too. (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass)

    The Curse Workers Series by Holly Black:
    White Cat
    and
    Red Glove

    Well, there's alot of good serious fantasy out there. Robin Hobb is good, although she doesn't focus on the magic part so much. Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy is really good, although again, not so much magic. "Magician" is also nice, but I can't remember the author's name. "The Alchemyst", by Michael Scott, is a great modern day fantasy book. Have you read Twilight? I didn't enjoy, but there's werewolves and vampires aplenty! Enjoy.

    I really like Eragon and its two sequels, Eldest, and Brisngr by Christopher Paolini. They are like a cross between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

    MAGIC BOOK: wicked: witch & curse and wicked: legacy and spellbound by nancy holder and debbie viguie
    ~~~it's about this girl (holly) who finds out that she is a witch when her parents and best friend die in a rafting accident that she is also involved in. there was a curse placed upon her family that says anyone u love will die in water. it has a lot of history and is really thrilling.
    WEREWOLF BOOK: blood and chocolate by annette curtis klause
    ~~~its about this girl (vivian) whose a werewolf but is trying to live a normal life.

    *Blood and Chocolate is all about werewolves. I forgot who it was by, but it is really amazing.
    *The books of Pellinor- The Naming, The Riddle, The Crow, and (to be realized soon) The Singing. This series is really good. It is all about a girl who goes on a journey and is learning the ways of learning magic. By Alison Croggon
    *The Eragon Series, about dragons, and magic, and good vs. evil.
    *Gregor the Overlander (not really a young adult book, but still really amazing). About a kid who falls down into the center of the earth and deals with magical beings such as giant cockroaches. By Suzanne Collins.
    *The Sea of Trolls, and its sequel, The Land of Silver Apples by Nancy Farmer. Amazing books all about magic and trolls and magical beings and giants and unicorns and everything you can think of.
    *(not really about magic, more science fiction) The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. Five kids have been given bird DNA and they end up having wings. They finally escape the school they were confined to and they must run away from these werwolf-like creatures called Erasers. They are all rebels who don't listen to any adults. Really awesome books.
