take atleast one full page of notes for every lecture/class session - no matter what the class, and no matter how stupid it seems.. just do it.

    Go with the flow
    that's is don't jump ahead
work up the scale 100 classes then 200, 300 and 400
    after a year don't ump into a 400 class.

i am an RA. I work with freshman all the time. Here is what i tell them.
Schedual a time to study, like 2 hours 3x a week. just like a regular class. Put this time in your schedual and attend it like you do class. go and study, do homework or anything you need. You will always have something to do. and if you "dont" then just reread your textbooks or read ahead. Do something.

It will be hard at first, but believe me. You will find that you always have all your work done, you will have more free time as your not wasteing time with last min studying, you will find your grades do better, and its easier to study and get stuff done.

This does work. And if you have trouble with doing work dont bring your laptop. Write your essay on paper and transcribe it later. dont bring music, you will only find yourself playing with it to pass time. Dont bring people, at least not at first you will only play.

2h 3x a week or just an hour 5 times a week. it is a lot better than all nighters. good luck!!

hey im a freshman in college too! some things that work for me are...
ok, take notes every minute of each class, even little details may turn up in tests, oh and watch for repetition, when a teacher repeats an idea or point make sure you get it down! Also a MUST HAVE is a planner! it might seem dorky but trust me, writing down assignments, due dates, and test dates is definetely gonna help you. : )

Never rely on anything that isn't in person. Unless you have someone right in front of you TELLING you that you'll get this money or TELLING you that you had the right answer, then don't make any assumptions. Sit down with professors before/after class if you have ANY questions. There's no such thing as a stupid question. Be sure that all your finances are taken care of. Sit down with a councelor and be sure to have everything planned out so you're not missing anything come graduation. If you're going to be livining in a dorm, try to blank others out because dorm buddies can be a HUGE influence and you just don't realize it.

Biggest things to remember is that there's play time, and there's also work time. There are times where you can have fun, drink and be merry. But you HAVE to turn off the cell phone, avoid your emails and just do what you have to do for class.

I carry a little recorder to a couple of my classes. I find that it makes it easier because 70% of the sh*t on my tests are from discussions in class. So be sure to do that if you have to. Just highlight your book, keep sticky notes available and listen. If you pay attention, I guarantee you'll have a good college experience.

Be sure to loosen up every now and then though. Otherwise, you'll get friedddd and then you'll start hating yourself. Avoid that as much as possible.
