I would also strongly suggest some of Silver Ravenwolf's books as well.
Normally I would not suggest them, but for one with such a desire, those books are of the quality that you need.

How does someone reject the metaphysical belief in the supernatural while seeking the objective form of it, especially when such things are continuously proven false by science and logic? Magic is fake. Harry Potter has just as much claim to what "real" magic is as any book of occult lore because attempting spells found in either will result in complete jack.

Very subtle, Alex. Bravo!
*golf clap*
Spells are a form of prayer that can be used by anyone of any of the Pagan or Heathen faith paths. If you do not acknowledge any deities, what, exactly, would you base your prayers on? I suppose if you were a LaVeyan Satanist that would work, but I've yet to meet one that actually gave spells and magic as you describe it any actual credence and could keep a straight face when asked a question like you ask.

Magic isn't real. Spells don't exist. Sorry to break the news of reality to you.

You kind of have to be strong spiritually to do what you are talking about...because it isn't something a human causes, the human appeals to the 'higher force' to help with the task...so develop the spiritual side of yourself...

Ugh, the people who say that witchcraft, magic, and spells are not real are those who have an unrealistic view of what it is. A spell is a ritual of sorts to set your will and intentions to creating a desired change. Spells do not and cannot defy the laws of nature and physics, and real witches know this - so it is not supernatural. It is very natural, working with your own energy and abilities, as well as the earth's natural resources. Yes, anyone can learn with study/training and practice.
Witchcraft isn't just about lighting candles and reciting catchy little rhymes. Witchcraft is rooted in nature and psychology. As an example, anyone who has ever taken aspirin to relieve a headache can thank those who would have been considered witches for discovering that willow bark relieved pain and fever - this is where the active ingredient in aspirin came from. I personally rarely go through the process of creating and casting spells as a witch, but people often come to me for natural remedies to minor ailments (I always recommend consulting a medical professional for anything that may require professional treatment! I've been trained in herbalism and therefore can safely recommend/make home remedies for minor issues, as well as I utilize the Law of Attraction, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help with the psychological aspects of situations.)
No belief in any god or gods is required to work witchcraft, but witches tend to be very earth-spiritual, feeling a connection or bond with the natural world and the earth elements.
I would recommend this book to help you start learning the mental focus needed for working witchcraft: http://www.amazon.com/Inner-Temple-Witchcraft-Meditation-Development/dp/0738702765/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312557066&sr=8-1
I would also suggest that you may find classes and workshops locally, offered at gatherings or pagan/metaphysical shops, through the Witches Voice here:

Blessings on your journey.

Yes, anyone can learn magic. Although with researching your magic, you will be surprised to develop a spiritual side in the process. That's what happened to me.
The best book I can recommend is "The Spiral Dance" by a lady named StarHawk. It might be a little more spiritual than you might be looking for, but she has very easy spells.
